When we first found out I was pregnant with our first child, A small part of myself felt relief when we learned our first child would be a boy. Not because I don’t like girls, but because I was afraid that I wouldn’t know what to do with a girl. I didn’t consider myself “girly” enough to handle one, so I was somewhat fearful of having a girl. However, I learned over the years that my fear was steeped in naivety because girls are a wonderful blessing.
Not all Mothers Believe They Can Raise A Girl
It might seem odd to some, but I know I’m not the first mother to be concerned about having a girl. I’ve spoken to many first time mothers who also described their fears about having one as well. It’s not a new problem. Normally us mothers don’t like to paste it on mother blogs or really talk about it because well – we love ALL of our children. This is also not to say that Boys are not a blessing either because they are of their own unique type of blessing to a mother. But I thought I’d write here to encourage mothers for their girls if they find themselves concerned in the same way as I once was.
It was never out of disgust or hate, that I was afraid of having a girl. It was because I myself was a girl. I know first hand of all the struggles a girl will face in her life. I know what society wants to force on her and I know the struggle it may be for her to live her life in accordance with the gospel. All the world’s evils that could potentially fall upon her, run forefront in my mind. Yet she is a blessing still. I shouldn’t let the fears of the world cause me to fear a beautiful daughter.
God Gives Us the Child Best Suited For Us
It wasn’t until after I had my first daughter that I learned very quickly that God will give me a child that is best suited for me. Even if I find she is the exact opposite of me. It is my daughters who probably stretch me the most. Not because of their difficulty but because it is my daughters who watch me the closest. It is because of them I watch my actions even more so as a woman who claims Christ as her savior.
My daughters will learn mostly through me, how to be a mother to her own children. It is through me they will learn how to love their spouse, how to love others and how they look at their own self. It is by my example when they see an exhausted mother reach for her Bible and care for the words written within it. Through me, they will learn best, how to love God.
Different Personalities Grow You Personally
Each one of my daughters has a different personality unlike my own. They are each unique and yet they are all the best fit for me. God knows what He is doing when He places us together. We can be so grossly different and yet we can learn to love and interact together.
Each daughter has her gifts. One daughter (my eldest) is always asking what she can do to help me. She may complain at times, but most often she is always willing to help. My second daughter whines more about cleaning, but she tells me daily how much she loves me without my prompting. I can’t go more than an hour without an impromptu hug. She loves to love. My youngest is just learning about her world, but we can already tell she is a lively little child. She loves to smile, and she can cure the grumpiest of attitudes of anyone in this house. Each personality is different. One is girly, one is a tomboy, and we are still trying to figure out the other one. But, I have learned how to find a commonality between them and myself.
Daughters Are a Blessing
While I would never want to sound as though I love one gender over the other because I don’t, they each have their own uniqueness. However, It is with my girls that I have learned better, how to love being a mother. They are the ones who show the most reciprocal love. They are most often more aware of my moods, and they usually are the ones who reach out their hand to see if mommy needs any help. As a more experienced mother, I now know that it is with my girls that I have learned best how to be a better mother. I’m not so sure anymore that I could do all of this without them. They are such a blessing to me and I have no doubt they can be a blessing to you too. Don’t let your fears concern you away from the love and blessing of a beautiful little girl.
